Chennai court reserves order in
TANSI case

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Even as the Supreme Court was expected to pronounce its verdict in the TANSI property case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa any day, the Small Causes court in Chennai on Tuesday reserved its orders on a petition filed by her confidante and co-accused Sasikala Natarajan, seeking to lift the attachment on the TANSI property.

During the course of the Supreme Court hearing, flowing from the acquittal verdict handed down by the Madras high court, Sasikala had submitted a memorandum seeking to surrender the property without consideration.

When the case came up before the Small Causes court on Tuesday, Sasikala's counsel told Judge S R Singaravelan that he could pass orders even while a related case was pending before the apex court.

Responding to the judge's query, made during an earlier hearing, he said there was no need for the respondent to provide security in lieu of the attached property.

The counsel said the recall of the attachment was being sought only to restore it to TANSI.

Special public prosecutor Chandrasekharan endorsed Sasikala's position through a memorandum.

He said the Supreme Court had not stayed the high court's order of acquittal in the criminal case. Hence the attachment order, passed after the trial court had ordered conviction and sentence in the case, could be withdrawn, he said.
