Seven extremists belonging to the Communist Party of United States of India (Janashakti Veeranna) were killed in an encounter with police in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday.
A police team spotted a group of Naxalites on the outskirts of Bandalavagu village in Mahadevpur mandal at around 1145 IST. When asked to surrender, the Naxalites opened fire and were killed in the police retaliation.
Suryam, an important functionary of the group, was among those killed, a police spokesman said. Others who were killed were Jampanna, Rajanna, Timmanna, Ravi, Malathi and Tirumallesh.
The police recovered an AK-47 rifle, a US-made 9-mm carbine, an 8-mm rifle and two double-barrel guns from the scene.
Twenty-nine detonators, ammunition, a camera flash, 15 kitbags and some literature were also found.
