Abdullah, Azad elected to Rajya Sabha from Kashmir

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah and state Congress president Ghulam Nabi Azad are among four candidates elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Their election was announced on the last day for filing of nominations to the November 18 elections, after a two-hour discussion between leaders of rival parties led to a consensus.

Earlier, Abdullah and state Congress chief Ghulam Nabi Azad were among four leaders who filed nomination papers for the J&K Rajya Sabha seats.

Abdullah was the first to file the nomination papers at the office of the secretary of the legislative assembly, secretariat sources said.

Azad, Trilok Singh Bajawa of the PDP and former union minister Saif-uddin Soz of the Congress also filed their nominations after Abdullah.

Four seats to the Upper House from the state are vacant after end of the terms of Azad, Mirza Abdul Rasheed, Sharif-din-Shariq and Kushak Thiksey.

Scrutiny of nomination papers would be held on November 11 and elections, if necessary, would be held on November 18, the sources said.
