Tamil Nadu police rescues two bonded labourers from Surat

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu police has rescued two children from Surat, who were working as bonded labourers.

Raghavan and Irulan informed their parents in Ucchapatti village about their miseries, after which the police swung into action.

The duo said they were made to do hard and hazardous work for long hours and given nothing more than two meals a day.

Often, they were encouraged to chew paan, gutka and even drugs to ward off sleep and tiredness.

The boys are happy to be back with their parents. They said many children are still working as bonded labourers in and around Surat and pleaded for efforts to get them all released.
