Farooq Abdullah to contest RS election

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said he would contest the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election from the state.

"Yes, I am filing my nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha election," he said in Srinagar.

Abdullah, who relinquished the post of National Conference president in favour of his son Omar Abdullah a month before the recently concluded assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir, stepped down from the chief minister's post after his party suffered a drubbing at the hustings.

Stating that he would continue to work for the state, he said: "My first base is the state. I will raise the problems of the state [in the Rajya Sabha]."

He, however, said he would not join the Union council of ministers.

Abdullah's son, Omar, resigned from the Union council of ministers last month, but Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is yet to accept his resignation.
