Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday claimed in Patna that his party has managed to rustle up the majority to topple the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party-Bharatiya Janata Party government in Uttar Pradesh.
Mulayam said he had the support of all 'democratic and secular' legislators, including the BJP rebels and independent MLAs.
He wanted the Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnukant Shastri to convene a special session of the assembly for a trial of strength, warning that if such a session was not convened then he would take the 'issue to the people'.
He contended that there was no need for the imposition of President's rule in the state as an 'alternative arrangement' was available.
Mulayam praised the BJP rebels saying they have done a 'great job' by withdrawing support to the Mayawati government. "Their move is in right direction to save the country from the communal BJP," he said.
Responding to a question, Mulayam said he has asked the Congress party for support in forming the government in Uttar Pradesh.
