PWP ministers resign from Maharashtra government

Our Correspondent in Mumbai

The Democratic Front government in Maharashtra received a jolt when two of its ministers from the Peasants and Workers' Party, Ganpat Deshmukh and Meenakshi Patil, resigned on Thursday.

The PWP was unhappy with the re-induction of Nationalist Congress Party leader Sunil Tatkare into the government.

According to the PWP, Tatkare was instrumental in defeating their candidate in the recently held local elections in Raigad.

Due to pressure from the PWP, Tatkare had to resign as the minister of state for urban development in March.

However, the NCP had sent to Raigad a fact-finding team led by Ajit Pawar, nephew of party president Sharad Pawar. The committee had given a decision in favour of Tatkare.

It was not clear whether the party, which has 5 members in the House, would withdraw support to the government.
