President K R Narayanan has an 'open mind' on running for a second term, Congress sources said after party president Sonia Gandhi had a meeting with him on Tuesday evening.
The sources said that Gandhi during the meeting supported a second term for Narayanan as President, who in turn, thanked the Congress chief and was understood to have said that he had an 'open mind' on the issue.
Gandhi discussed several other matters of national importance with the President.
The Congress had earlier hailed Narayanan as 'one of our exceptionally good Presidents' and indicated support for him for a second term if he was willing.
The Left parties have already come out in support of a second term for Narayanan, whose term as President is expiring on July 24.
Former Prime Minister V P Singh and Lok Janshakti leader Ram Vilas Paswan met Narayanan separately in the last few days and extended their support for a second term for him.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who has been given similar authorisation by NDA, had raised the issue with Gandhi last week but promised to call her for a formal interaction on the matter soon.
