J&K govt for extradition of militancy financier

Sumir Kaul in Srinagar

The government is contemplating a move to seek deportation of London-based Kashmiri separatist leader Ayub Thakur for allegedly funding the militancy movement in Jammu and Kashmir.

Highly-placed sources in the government in Srinagar told PTI that the state would soon request the external affairs ministry to take up his case.

Thakur's alleged involvement came to light following the arrest of the editor of a monthly magazine Imtiaz Ahmad Bazaz and two of his associates last week for allegedly funding militant activities in the state, sources said.

Records of bank transactions showed that nearly Rs 500,000 was transferred from the London account of Mercy Universal to Bazaz's account in New Delhi, they said.

The London account is owned by Thakur.

The sources said that Thakur does not possess valid travel documents as his passport has not been renewed by the external affairs ministry.

This was the reason for his inability to fly to Dubai to attend the Sharjah meeting between Sardar Qayoom (prime minister of PoK) and Hurriyat leaders, including assassinated leader Abdul Ghani Lone and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
