Ten Pakistani soldiers killed in Indian firing

Ten Pakistani soldiers were killed and 15 enemy bunkers destroyed in retaliatory firing by Indian troops along the Line of Control in Poonch and Rajouri areas of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said on Saturday.

Pakistani troops resorted to small arms firing and mortar shelling in Noushera, Rajouri and Poonch sectors on Saturday afternoon, he said.

"Indian troops effectively retaliated and heavy firing and shelling continued till this evening," the spokesman said, adding, "ten Pakistani soldiers are confirmed to have been killed and fifteen of their forward bunkers opposite LoC were destroyed."

The exchange between the two sides was continuing till last reports came in. However, its intensity had reduced, he said.

Three civilians, who were injured in enemy firing in Sunderbani area of Rajouri district, were hospitalised.

Reports from Srinagar said one person -- identified as Mohammed Sharief -- was killed and six people were injured due to shelling in forward posts and villages in Uri sector of Baramulla. The injured were shifted to Srinagar for treatment.

"The shelling started abruptly this morning. I was standing in my compound and suddenly a shell landed near our house. I was hit by a shrapnel and fell down," said Naseema Jan from Uri, who was undergoing treatment in Srinagar

Her father Gulzar Ahmad said: "We took shelter in the house. Shells rained every second on our village and we later fled from the village. The area is highly tense."

The areas hit by Pakistani shelling in Uri included Balakote, Silikote, Dachina, Uran Bawa, Talwari, Nambla Garkote, Salamabad, Kamalkote, Basgrah, Churanda, Sultan Taki, Ashim, Gawalta, Gingal and Morah.
