In the first such action of its kind against police officials, Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi has ordered the suspension of seven police officials of Gaya in connection with the murder of a businessman, official sources said on Saturday.
The policemen have been taken to task for their failure to solve the case of Gaya-based businessman Balkishan Gupta's killing, they said.
They include Deputy Superintendent of Police Ranjit Kumar, two sub inspectors (SIs) and two assistant sub inspectors (ASIs), the sources said.
Expressing concern over the murder, the chief minister said the state government would not tolerate crime, specially murder and kidnapping, they added.
Gupta, a businessman dealing in motorcycle spare parts, was gunned down in the town's busy market last Thursday.
The chief minister has sought an explanation from the Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) and the Gaya district Superintendent of Police for their indifferent and careless attitude towards the case, the sources said.
She directed the police officials to arrest the culprits within 24 hours of face the consequences, they said.
In a somewhat similar case, the culprits behind the murder of Manoj Kamalia, a prominent businessman of Patna, in April are also yet to be arrested.
