Mayawati wins confidence vote

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday night won the confidence vote in the state assembly by 217-180 votes, Speaker Kesrinath Tripathi announced.

The Bahujan Samaj Party leader, who had claimed the support of 211 legislators at the time of staking claim to form government, emerged victorious with the support of six more members in the 403-member House with an effective strength of 399 (four seats are vacant).

There was one absentee.
