The Bihar police has a new job: Distributing invitation cards to the wedding of Chief Minister Rabri Devi and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Prasad Yadav's second daughter.
Rohini Acharya will wed Samresh Singh, a software engineer settled in the United States, on May 24.
According to sources, police vehicles have been on 'marriage duty' for the past few days.
Police sources told rediff.com that policemen spend considerable time searching for a particular house or person to hand over the card to.
In fact, the all-important task was handed over to senior officials, who in turn delegated the work as per the address and police stations under their charge.
"I have to distribute about 18 cards in my locality by Sunday as directed by the higher authorities," said one official in Patna.
Interestingly, officials close to the chief minister have attached a paper to each card on which the receiver's signature is supposed to be taken.
Some other departments too are working to ensure that the 'wedding of the year' goes off without a hitch.
Over a dozen ministers are neglecting their official duties to take care of the 'marriage portfolio'.
At least two ministers and senior officials have been toiling for a fortnight to lay a road to and electrify Hichan Bigha village in Aurangabad district. This is where the groom hails from.
The chief minister herself postponed a crucial meeting with the planning commission to make time for the wedding preparations.
