Sharamjeevi Exp derailment: 'Dead' passenger returns home

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Udai Singh, who railway authorities said had died when the Patna-bound Shramjeevi Express derailed near Jaunpur (in Uttar Pradesh), on Wednesday returned home hale and hearty much to the surprise of his well wishers.

For his family members, his arrival lifted the pall of gloom that had set in on hearing of his death.

Singh is a resident of Mithauli village in Bihar's Madhubani district.

According to police sources in the district, he was listed as 'dead' in the official casualty list released by the railways following the derailment.

However, when Singh's family members were about to leave for Lucknow to claim his body, he appeared at their home, the sources said.

Delhi-based Singh was on his way to attend a wedding in the family.

Singh told the police that soon after the accident, he left the scene and headed for home, without informing anyone, leaving his luggage and other valuables behind.

His absence from the accident site may have led to the appearance of his name in the casualty list, police said.
