TN assembly passes bill on dual membership

Amidst a walk out by the entire opposition, the Tamil Nadu assembly on Friday passed a bill that would effectively prevent M K Stalin, son of DMK president M Karunanidhi, from being both a member of the state assembly and the mayor of Chennai.

However, the BJP members did not walk out with the others.

Several ministers defended the bill in the face of criticism that it infringed the rights of civic body representatives.

The opposition, including BJP, said though they welcomed the principle of 'one-man-one-post', the measure should not be given retrospective effect.

Leader of the opposition K Anbazhagan said that this particular measure (the clause on retrospective effect) was aimed specifically at Stalin.
