Speaker's name to be decided by Wednesday: Mahajan

The name of candidate for Lok Sabha speaker's post is likely to be finalised by Wednesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan said on Tuesday.

"The process has begun. I held discussions with prime minister [Atal Bihari Vajpayee] this morning. After the prime minister gives his nod, I will hold discussions with leaders of the NDA [National Democratic Alliance] partners and then with leaders of the Opposition," Mahajan said in New Delhi.

"We expect to complete the process of naming the candidate latest by tomorrow."

While refusing to comment on the names being reported in the media, Mahajan said, "Informal discussions are already in progress in the BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] as also with NDA partners."

"No individual or party has staked claim for the post so far," he said.

The speaker's post fell vacant following the death of G M C Balayogi in a helicopter crash in March. The election is slated for May 10.
