Minister of State for External Affairs Omar Abdullah resumed office on Monday morning.
He had resigned following the National Conference's decision to abstain from voting on the Gujarat debate in the Lok Sabha on April 30.
On April 28, his father and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had handed over Omar's resignation to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The prime minister had rejected the offer.
Omar had told rediff.com that he had resigned because he couldn't have remained in the government and abstained from voting.
Political observers and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders feel that the move was part of a plan to get Farooq a nomination for the post of vice-president of India.
The chief minister has on numerous occasions expressed a desire to run for the office of president or vice-president.
Some BJP members are opposed to giving the post to him on a platter, as the party can have a vice-president of its own given the fact that the National Democratic Alliance has enough numbers in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to see through one of the BJP leaders.
The government has already announced that it would hold elections for the two posts at the same time.
