Rajasthan Congress gears up for RS polls

Despite enjoying a majority in the Rajasthan assembly, the Congress is going all out to ensure the victory of its candidates in Wednesday's biennial Rajya Sabha election.

"Although the victory of our candidates - Natwar Singh, Abrar Ahmed and Prabha Thakur - is certain, we are not taking any chances," Mahesh Joshi, deputy chief whip of the Congress Legislature Party, said in Jaipur on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has convened a meeting to finalise the party's strategy and a mock poll will also be held to familiarise legislators with the same, Joshi said.

The party's central observer Mohsina Kidwai, who arrived in Jaipur on Monday evening, discussed the poll strategy with the chief minister.

Joshi said that all the 153 Congress MLAs in the 200-member house were fully behind the party candidates, who were selected by party president Sonia Gandhi, he said.

"Our candidates would also get votes of some independents and others," he added.

Two of the seats were earlier held by the BJP and one by the Congress.
