Former All Party Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq on Monday condemned the arrest of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik under the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance and said that APHC would meet shortly to discuss the matter.
Speaking to rediff.com from his residence in Srinagar, the Mirwaiz said it was too serious a matter to be left alone.
"I have not been able to speak to the APHC chairman Abdul Gani Bhat. But the arrest of Yasin Malik is too serious an issue and it cannot be left alone like that. I am sure the APHC would meet soon to discuss this matter and chalk out a strategy to prevent any misuse of POTO," he said.
He described Malik's arrest as "gross misuse of power and a clear case of victimisation."
Yasin Malik was arrested in Srinagar early on Monday morning when he was about to address a news conference in connection with the arrest of Mushtaq Ahmed Dar and Shazia Rasool on Sunday.
According to Director General of Police A K Suri, Dar and Rasool had brought $ 100,000 into the country illegaly. The money was meant to be handed over to Malik.
Rasool told the police that the money was given to them by JKLF's Pakistan-based international spokesman Altaf Qadri.
Malik has blamed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah for his arrest. "I was expecting my arrest in view of the stand I have taken on the forthcoming assembly elections, but I never thought they would stoop so low. They have started a media war against me," Malik told reporters on Sunday in Srinagar.
Suri, however, denied any political motivation behind Malik's arrest.
