Hurriyat leaders leave for Srinagar

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The leaders of the All Party Hurriyat Conference, who had been camping in Delhi for last one week in their bid to meet the top government officials, left for Srinagar on Thursday morning.

Before leaving Delhi Professor Abdul Gani Bhat, chairman of APHC, said that he is going to make a 'major announcement' in Srinagar next week.

He, however, refused to elaborate what he meant by 'major announcement'. Bhat's statement comes on the eve of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit to Jammu and Kashmir next week.

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Union Defence Minister George Fernandes would accompany the prime minister.

Home ministry sources, however, don't seem to be worried about the 'major announcement'.

"They have been here essentially trying to revive their contacts in the government. The international pressure is increasing and they have been told to participate in the elections to the state assembly to be held later this year," a top home ministry official said.
