Bars in Goa to stay open till 2330 hrs

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panaji

Bars in Goa will now be open till 2330 hrs, thanks to the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state.

The issue had come up for consideration as the excise authorities had asked all bars and restaurants to close by 2300 hrs, whether they served liquor beyond the prescribed time or not.

So, either the owners had to down the shutters or bribe officials in order to remain open.

To compound their problems, the September 11 attacks in the United States had led to a recession in the tourism industry.

"The new relaxation will bring respite for us at least for the next two months," said Prakash Naik, president of the Goa Hotel and Restaurant Owners' Association.

"I have no objection if the customer sits with a glass even beyond 11.30 pm, but no bar should be kept open beyond prescribed hours," quipped Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

The new rules may not benefit the tourism industry in a big way since the prime season is almost over. But with assembly elections fast approaching, it will definitely benefit a large number of politicians.
