DNA tampering issue: Five doctors, police officer suspended in J&K

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday suspended five doctors and a police officer found to be involved in the DNA samples tampering case.

The samples were meant to ascertain the identity of five persons killed by security personnel at Pachalthan-Pathribal in Anantnag district of Kashmir in March, 2000.

As per the orders issued in Jammu on Tuesday, the officers would remain under suspension pending completion of an inquiry by the one-man commission headed by Justice G A Kuchay, a retired judge of the J&K high court.

The officers placed under suspension are Dr Balbir Kaur, head of department of forensic medicine, Associate Professor Dr Fazili, Dr Abida Kouser of the forensic medicine department, all from Srinagar's Government Medical College and Dr S M Saleem and Dr Tariq Ahmed, and Deputy Superintendent of Police Sheikh Abdul Rehman.

Meanwhile, an official spokesman said that the test results of the samples sent for DNA finger-printing to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Kolkata were collected by the state police on March 14 last.

He said that in view of the contradictory reports from the CFSL and the one received earlier from the Centre for DNA Finger Printing and Diagnostic Laboratory (FPDL), Hyderabad, the authorities in Jammu have urged CSFL, Kolkata and DNA FPDL, Hyderabad to send their representatives to collect fresh blood samples of the relatives of the deceased persons.

They have also been asked to collect the controlled samples from the mortal remains of the deceased so that no question is raised about the collection of samples and the procedure followed in sending these to the two laboratories for the desired tests, he said.
