Jaya defends raids on former DMK ministers

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday defended the raids on the premises of former DMK ministers, saying they were based on concrete evidence.

Talking to newspersons in Chennai, she said, "The raids are definitely not vindictive. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption was only acting on complaints received against the former ministers. All the cases relate to accumulation of wealth disproportionate to known sources of income."

"The government does not interfere with the functions of the DVAC," she added.

Jayalalithaa revealed that the DVAC was looking into the complaints against some more former DMK ministers.

The raids, meanwhile, continued for the second day on Saturday in the residences of former ministers K Ponmudi, M R K Panneerselvam, Andhiyur Selvaraj and Suresh Rajan, apart from former legislator N K K Periyaswamy, and the premises of some of their associates and relatives, numbering over 40.
