J&K group asks women to wear burqa

Mukhtar Ahmad In Srinagar

The Lashkar-e-Jabbar, which spearheaded a campaign to enforce an Islamic dress code last year, on Thursday asked the Kashmiri women to wear burqa.

In August 2000, LeJ militants in Srinagar had thrown acid on three women who were not wearing burqas.

In a statement on Thursday, the outfit's leader, Irfan Jameel said, "We don't want to throw acid on our own sisters in Kashmir. The women must wear purdah."

"After the September 11 developments we had to halt our activities. We have decided to restart our activities from April."

The statement added that the cable operators had "unleashed a campaign of obscenity and vulgarity."
