Arundhati Roy released, will
consult lawyer for appeal

Booker Prize winner and Narmada Bachao Andolan activist Arundhati Roy on Thursday said she would explore all possibilities to challenge her conviction in a contempt case by the Supreme Court.

Amidst shouting of slogans by NBA activists, Roy emerged out of the high-security Tihar jail smiling and waving to her admirers.

The Supreme Court initiated contempt proceedings against Roy after she criticised the court in an affidavit filed before it. She was sentenced to a day's symbolic imprisonment and fined Rs 2,000.

Speaking to reporters, Roy said she would consult her lawyer on the possibility of challenging the Supreme Court verdict.

"I do not know whether there is any point in filing a petition. I will have to talk to my lawyer about that. It is a legal issue," she said.

Roy was released after she paid the fine of Rs 2000 imposed on her by the apex court.

When asked about her stay in the jail, Roy said: "It was 500 times better than (what it would be) for the ordinary public."

Later, addressing NBA activists, Roy said: "Perpetrators of riots in Gujarat are roaming free on the streets while writers and social workers are (being) sent to jail."

She appealed to her supporters to give up the hunger strike that they began on Wednesday following her arrest.
