Author Arundhati Roy will pay a Rs 2,000 fine slapped on her by the Supreme Court, her lawyer Prashant Bhushan said on Wednesday.
Failure to pay the fine would have meant that the author, who has already spent a day in prison, would stay there for three months more.
"There is a court higher than the Supreme Court, and that is the court of conscience," Bhushan said. "If one follows one's conscience and believes that what one is doing is right, then one has to suffer the consequences," he added.
Roy was convicted in a contempt case related to her criticism of the Supreme Court in an affidavit she had filed before the court.
