Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Five members of the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) of the state police were on Monday killed and an official wounded in two fierce encounters in Jammu and Kashmir.

Militants ambushed a patrol of the SOG at village Bermidhar at Gool Gulab Grah village in Udhampur district in Jammu region on Monday afternoon, police said.

"The militants hurled grenades and opened heavy fire at the SOG personnel from automatic weapons killing four men on the spot," a police officer said.

"Complete details are still awaited," he added.

Authorities rushed reinforcements to the area to mount searches.

Meanwhile, in another incident, SOG personnel and security forces on Monday afternoon raided a house at Sheerwani colony in Baramulla, police sources said.

Militants hiding inside opened heavy fire on the raiding party killing one person on the spot while a police official was seriously injured and rushed to hospital, police sources said.

Police said troops encircled the area and engaged the militants in an encounter.

Troops had encircled the locality and no to-and-fro movement was being allowed, a nearby resident said.

Tension gripped the area following the clash and troops had not subdued the militants till this report was filed.
