Tara Shankar Sahay in Kurukshetra
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on Sunday said assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir must be held under the President's rule.
Speaking to reporters at the end of a two-day national executive in Kurukshetra, RSS chief spokesman M G Vaidya said: "This (President's rule) will create trust and enable those persons who are hesitant to enter the poll fray. It may also help in improving poll percentages...but [the] government has to decide," he said.
In its political resolution, the RSS supported the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's decision to seek back a letter in which it had promised to abide by the court verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.
Vaidya pointed out that his party also endorsed the VHP viewpoint that a court is not a competent authority to decide on matters of faith.
He pointed out that the latest court verdict on the maintenance of status quo in Ayodhya went against the letter and spirit of the 1994 court judgement which spoke of a portion of the disputed land being returned to the VHP.
Asked about the mediatory role being played by the Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati in the Ayodhya dispute, Vaidya said: "I don't know what mediation he is doing."
