Gupta appointed as Delhi Police chief, Sharma moves to BSF

R S Gupta, an expert in security and intelligence matters, was on Saturday night appointed Delhi Police chief succeeding Ajay Raj Sharma, who was given the charge of Border Security Force after a successful three-year stint as national capital's police commissioner.

A 1968 batch Indian Police Service officer from the Union Territory cadre, Gupta, presently Special Commissioner (Administration), held sensitive departments of intelligence and security during his stint in the police.

However, he is likely to command the police unit for a period of 18 months only before his retires.

Sharma, an IPS officer of 1966 batch, will take over as the new director general of BSF replacing Gurbachan Jagat, who retires on Sunday.

Sharma, who belongs to the Uttar Pradesh cadre and enjoys the distinction of being the only police chief who completed his tenure of three years, had served the BSF before joining Delhi Police as commissioner.
