Heavy rains claim 40 lives in Thane district

At least forty people were feared killed by floods set off by heavy rains in Thane district and its adjoining areas since Tuesday, police sources said on Thursday night.

They said several persons were washed away in flooded nullahs (drainage passages) following heavy downpours in the area.

Eleven persons were still reported missing, police added.

Naval personnel were likely to join search operations in Bhiwandi on Friday.

The break up of the casualties is: Manikpur (2), Palghar (1), Saphale (2), Galwad (1), Dahanu (5), Poisar (4), Vikramgarh (1), Bhiwandi (8), Titwala (1), Virar (5), Vangaon (7), Tarapur (4) and Thane city (1).
