Geelani's demand for blade, transistor turned down

Additional security forces were on Thursday deployed in the Birsa Munda central jail following reports of a bomb threat to the prison where high profile detainee Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been demanding a blade 'for personal use' and a transistor radio.

"One platoon of commando military police and two sections of Jharkhand Armed Police reached the jail to beef up security around the jail," a senior jail officer said.

The former All-Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman's demand for a blade has been turned down, as the jail rulebook does not permit it 'because a blade can be used to commit suicide', he said.

Geelani's demand for a transistor has also not been met.

"He is getting religious texts, magazines, newspapers. A barber and a doctor also visit his cell regularly," the officer said.

Asked whether the authorities pressed the panic button by calling in reinforcements following threats as reported in a section of media, the official said, "Actually you people (media) are disclosing strategic points of the jail by publishing such reports."
