Omar Abdullah flays Centre for ignoring his father

Two days ahead of taking over as the chief of the National Conference, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Omar Abdullah on Friday lashed out at the Centre for ignoring his father Farooq Abdullah's vice-presidential aspirations.

The minister said his father had been 'used' by the central government during difficult times.

Among other things, "he represented the country at the all-important Geneva Commission where he single-handedly negated the Pakistani propaganda," Omar said.

Omar was dismissive of plans to offer a cabinet portfolio to Farooq Abdullah.

"To expect that the man will accept anything that you throw at him like some sort of grateful dog waiting for scrap is to add salt to the wounds you have inflicted," Omar said in Srinagar.

"The Centre has treated him shabbily," Omar said.

After the nomination of A P J Abdul Kalam as the presidential candidate, Farooq Abdullah admitted that his chances of becoming the Vice-President had become bleak.

The remarks, expected to trigger a political controversy, come only 48 hours ahead of his taking over the reins of his party at an extra-ordinary session.

Farooq, chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has already resigned as the party chief.
