After raising a storm, Perry keeps mum

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

Alex Perry, the New Delhi bureau chief of Time magazine who is in the eye of a storm following his unflattering report on the state of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's health, is refusing to comment on the resultant anger in government and the ruling National Democratic Alliance.

Perry, who is away from the capital on assignment, has maintained a conspicuous silence on the anger building up in the NDA, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party, following his report.

He even refused to respond to a query from rediff.com if he was feeling safe in India, given that Time itself has expressed serious concern for his safety, with BJP activists stepping up their protests and burning copies of the magazine.

Deepak Puri, Time bureau manager in New Delhi, also refused to comment, arguing that Azmar Sukander of the magazine's Hong Kong bureau was the only person competent to respond to such queries.

But queries to the Hong Kong bureau had not yielded a response till the time of publishing this report.
