Hurriyat exploited J&K people: Omar Abdullah

Minister of State for External Affairs Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said despite knowing that Kashmir could never become a part of Pakistan, the All Party Hurriyat Conference lacked the courage to tell the truth to the people.

"Hurriyat leaders have exploited the sentiments of people in the name of freedom and amassed huge wealth by all means to satiate their petty interests," he said while laying the foundation stone of a school building in Ganderbal on the outskirts of Srinagar.

"These people collected huge funds for providing relief to the militancy-hit people of the state, but swindled this for constructing huge mansions," he alleged. "They collected a whopping sum of Rs 500 lakhs for rehabilitating the people affected by militancy but nothing was spent for this purpose."

Separatist elements kept the innocent people in dark and brought only death and destruction to the state, he said. "Had these people not abetted terrorism in the state, the innocent people would not have been subjected to colossal miseries."

The former chairman of the Hurriyat, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was recently arrested, had furthered the cause of Pakistan, he said, adding that income tax records had showed that he had assets disproportionate to his known source of income.

Abdullah said Pakistan-occupied Kashmir-based leader of the Hizbul Mujahideen, Syed Salahuddin, had instigated thousands of innocent Kashmiri youth for arms training across the border, but allowed his sons to lead luxurious lives.

"The people of the state have now understood the real face of these so-called sympathisers and sooner or later these elements will have to give an account of their misdeeds before the masses," the minister added.
