Farooq to be chief ministerial candidate in J&K polls

Farooq Abdullah is likely to continue to be the National Conference's chief ministerial candidate in the assembly election scheduled in Jammu and Kashmir later this year.

Minister of State for External Affairs Omar Abdullah, who will take over the reins of the party from Farooq Abdullah on June 23, said, "Under the present situation, my father will be the party's chief ministerial candidate in the coming election".

Omar said the NC Working Committee would decide his future whether he would continue as a minister in the Union government, while being the party president.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who is presently in Delhi, said he would abide by what his party decides.

Asked whether he was an aspirant for the Vice-Presidentship of the country, Abdullah said, "I don't believe in speculations. However, if the country deems it fit, I don't have any problem in contesting for it."

Asked whether any parleys were being held with NDA leaders, Abdullah said, "I cannot hold talks on posts as we are only five MPs and definitely we are not in the driver's seat."
