EC to issue special identity cards for J&K voters

In a move aimed at conducting a free and fair election in Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission has decided to issue a special type of photo identity cards made by the Nashik based Government Press, which prints currency notes.

"The Commission has entrusted to the India Security Press the task of preparing pre-formatted, pre-numbered photo identity cars on special security paper on which the elector's photograph furnished by him would be affixed," Deputy Election Commissioner Sayan Chatterjee said.

He said in view of the security implications of photo identity cards, it was felt that a higher order of security was necessary for photo identity cards to about 5.5 million electorate in the state. The process of issuing the photo identity cards would commence from June 15, he said.
