Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

In Kargil's main market, shopkeepers pulled down their shutters.

"We can see shells landing on the adjacent mountains. Almost everyone is in his home now. There are only sounds of exploding shells," a local resident told rediff.com.

District administration sources said they are fully geared to meet any eventuality.

This is for the first time this year that shells have hit Kargil town.

Pakistani artillery has been targeting Drass, Turtuk, Batalik sectors in past one week.

Intermittent shelling is continuing on both sides of Turtuk area in Leh district.

A report from Gurez also said that heavy shelling was continuing in Cherwan and Badwan sectors.
