We will attack Kandla if Karachi
port blockaded: Pak naval chief

K J M Varma in Islamabad

Pakistan has threatened to launch missile attacks on the Kandla port in Gujarat if the Indian navy blocked the commercial port of Karachi in the event of a war.

Referring to reports that Indian naval ships were advancing towards Karachi, chief of Pakistan navy, Admiral Abdul Aziz Mirza, said: "There is no chance of Indian ships entering Karachi port as Pakistan's naval units are fully alert."

"Our ships are continuously monitoring the seas and there is no reality in such news items and such rumours are being circulated to misguide the people," he told reporters here yesterday.

Admiral Mirza said: "There were some strategic targets in India which could be attacked and one such could be Kandla port in Gujarat as it is the gateway for some important supplies like oil."

The Karachi port in the past appeared vulnerable as Indian ships virtually blockaded it and pounded it during the 1971 war.

But the Pakistan Navy in the recent weeks played down such a possibility stating that it has ability to ward off any such possibility.
