Goa throws up hung assembly

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panaji

Goa has thrown up a hung assembly once again, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party emerging as the single largest party with 17 seats.

It needs another four seats to reach the magic figure of 21 in the 40-member House.

The Congress is, however, not too far, with 16 seats.

One of them will have to shake hands with a regional party to form a coalition government in the state.

The United Goans Democratic Party has won three seats, while the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party has got two. The Nationalist Congress Party has bagged one seat.

Philip Neri Rodrigues, a former minister in the BJP government, has won as an independent.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has already said that the BJP will try to form the government.

Shantaram Naik, the interim state president of the Congress, has claimed that the "secular-minded" parties will support his party.

Talks are on and the outcome will be known by Saturday evening, Naik said.
