The ruling National Conference on Friday asserted that the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election would be held on time.
"The election would not be postponed," Sheikh Nazir, the party's general secretary, told rediff.com.
"There is a lot of speculation going on at the moment in the media and political circles about the J&K assembly election. But it is mere speculation," he added.
Most of the political parties have been demanding imposition of the Governor's rule in the state before the assembly election and the Centre too has been toying with the idea, in its bid to make the J&K election 'free and fair'.
Highly reliable sources in the central government, however, said that there has not been any decision regarding postponement of the election.
"No decision for postponing the election in Kashmir has been taken at any level in the government," a senior official dealing with Kashmir affairs said.
"Yes, the guessing games are on. Everybody is saying this or that might happen. But there is no authentic report whether the election is going to be postponed or not," the official added.
But several political analysts said the possibility of postponing the election remains, as the government has failed to rope in any separatist group to contest it.
