Hurriyat Conference chairman Abdul Gani Bhat, whose tenure ends on Wednesday, has denied that any decision has been taken on giving him an extension.
Speaking to PTI on Tuesday, Bhat said a decision was likely to be taken in a week's time after consultations with the various constituents of the separatist amalgam on who would succeed him.
Asked whether he would continue to h old the post, he said: "Till the next chairman is elected, I will have to."
Bhat said since the organisation is passing through a critical phase, it's going to be a daunting task for the next chairman.
Meanwhile, sources said that in the absence of three executive members of the Hurriyat Conference -- Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader Yaseen Malik and Peoples' League chief Sheikh Aziz -- who are in jail under the Public Safety Act, a one-year extension to Bhat was imminent.
There is pressure from other quarters, including militant groups, also on Bhat to continue as chairman.
