The Samajwadi Party on Monday declared it would support the opposition's vice-presidential candidate Sushil Kumar Shinde.
"In spite of the Congress party's attitude towards the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, where communal forces are in power because of Congress, we have decided to support the Congress candidate for the post," SP spokesman Amar Singh told reporters in New Delhi.
He said the SP had forgotten the past and took the decision for the sake of broader secular amity among non-BJP parties, particularly in the wake of the communal violence in Gujarat.
