Former Maharashtra governor Dr P C Alexander on Monday filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha as an independent candidate backed by the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party.
Dr Alexander, who resigned last week after serving as governor of Maharashtra for the longest term ever, filed his nomination papers at the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai in the presence of senior NCP leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Valse-Patil and R R Patil.
Dr Alexander had tendered his resignation on July 9 to President K R Narayanan who accepted it two days later.
He is scheduled to address a press conference at 1700 hrs.
Monday was the last day for filing nominations for the July 25 Rajya Sabha poll for the seat that fell vacant following the death of NCP member of RS Mukesh Patel.
