Onkar Singh in New Delhi
The Delhi Police special branch on Saturday confirmed that it would press charges of obscenity against journalist Iftikar Geelani booked under Official Secrets Act.
Speaking to rediff.com, a senior Delhi Police official said that they were still in the process of examining the floppies seized by the Income Tax department from Iftikar Geelani's house during a raid on June 9.
Delhi Police sources said they are in possession of some 'interesting emails' which allegedly indicate that Iftikar subscribed to pornographic material over the Internet.
"One of the emails received by him was from someone who invited the journalist to join in an orgy," a source said.
Those who know the arrested journalist decried the Delhi Police claim as an attempt to malign the scribe.
"They know that they are on weak wicket on OSA charges imposed on Iftikar. So now they are resorting to dirty tricks," one of Iftikar's journalist friends said.
The police also allege that Geelani possessed documents relating to the movement of Indian troops along the Line of Control and the international border with Pakistan.
Geelani has denied the charge saying the documents found in his possession are available to anyone with access to the Internet.
Geelani is the son in law of All-Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
