Mediapersons not allowed to meet Vaiko

Mediapersons were on Friday prevented from speaking to MDMK leader Vaiko, who was arrested on Thursday under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), when he was produced before a magistrate in Madurai.

Police said they were instructed by officials from Chennai not to allow the media to meet Vaiko.

There were heated arguments between the police and mediapersons when the former did not allow the latter to enter the magistrate's quarters.

"You can take photographs but definitely no meeting," Madurai Police Commissioner Suriya Prasad said.

Even Vaiko's advocates were prevented from speaking to him.

"We want to know whether our client is okay, alive and in good condition. You have been harassing him since Thursday," shouted Asai Thambi, a lawyer.

Later, Suriya Prasad said two of them would be allowed inside if Vaiko sought their assistance, which he did.

MDMK activists and lawyers decried plans to lodge Vaiko in the Vellore central jail saying, "You can't ask our leader to travel another 400 km (from Madurai to Vellore) after he travelled all the way from Chennai to Madurai (over 400 km)."

They pointed out that Vaiko was already tired after his long journey from Chicago, a city in the United States of America (USA).
