The ruling Telugu Desam Party retained the Medak seat when its candidate Karanam Uma Devi trounced her nearest rival and Congress nominee Patlolla Shashidhar Reddy in the assembly bypoll held onJuly 2.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi was pushed to the third position.
The counting of votes was taken up on Thursday.
Uma Devi was the wife of former higher education minister Karanam Ramachandra Rao, who died on May 13. The bypoll was held to fill the vacancy caused due to his death.
Uma Devi polled 43,453 votes while Shashidhar Reddy bagged 36,503 votes. TRS nominee Koppula Pochaiah, who was supported by the Telangana Sadhana Samithi, finished third with 33,756 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Sheggari Madhusudhan Goud polled only 3,007 votes and forfeited his security deposit.
The result has dealt a severe blow to the TRS and TSS, which are spearheading a movement for a separate Telangana state. Also, Medak is the home district of TRS founder K Chandrasekhar Rao and it is also the parliamentary constituency of MP A Narendra, who founded the TSS.
As many as 116,719 voters (68.31 per cent) out of the total electorate of 170,857 exercised their franchise.
The counting was over in just three hours since electronic voting machines were used.
