Jehad Council asks Hurriyat
to clarify stand on polls

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The United Jehad Council, an amalgam of several militant groups active in Kashmir, on Tuesday asked the All Parties Hurriyat Conference to announce its stand on the forthcoming assembly polls in the state.

The Muzaffarabad-based UJC headed by Syed Salah-ud-Din, the supreme commander of frontline militant group Hizbul Mujaheedin, also appealed to the people of Kashmir to boycott the polls.

In a statement issued in Srinagar on Tuesday evening, the Jehad Council said: "The APHC should immediately announce its stand on the polls and mount an anti-election campaign in Kashmir."

"The ongoing struggle [in Kashmir] is not for transfer of power or restoration of autonomy, but achieving freedom for which Kashmiris have made huge sacrifices. If the Hurriyat leaders continue to adopt an unclear policy over the issue of October elections, then they should quit the separatist conglomerate," the statement said.

The Jehad Council also lashed out at the visiting delegation of Muslim Majlis Mushawarrat who met various senior separatist leaders in Srinagar on Monday. The delegation was led by member of Parliament Syed Shahabuddin.

"The Mushawarat delegation should not persuade the Kashmiri leadership to fight elections, instead they should visit Gujarat and meet those whose near and dear were killed by Hindu fundamentalists," the Jehad Council statement said.
