With 5539 candidates in the fray, UP is far ahead in the numbers game

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, has a record number of 5539 candidates in the fray for 403 assembly seats even after rejections and withdrawal of nominations for the February election.

Shikohabad assembly constituency in Ferozabad district has the highest number of 29 candidates.

Close on the heels of Shikohabad is Dadraul in Shahjahanpur district with 26 nominations, followed by Afzalgarh in Bijnore district, Jaisinghpur in Sultanpur district and Jhansi city (24 each).

There are 23 candidates in the fray in Moradabad and Mehroni (Lalitpur district), 21 in Thana Bhawan (Muzaffarnagar district), Barkhera (Pilibhit district), Bilaspur (Rampur district) and for the Lalitpur city seat.

There are 22 other seats where the number of contestants exceed the electronic voting machine's capacity of 16 candidates, UP's chief election officer Noor Mohammad told rediff.com.

Before the scrutiny of papers and last date for withdrawal, there were as many as 171 constituencies with more than 16 candidates in the fray posing a threat to smooth conduct of the poll.

As many as 117,000 polling stations are being set up throughout the state where 98.8 million voters will exercise their franchise in the poll to be held in three phases on February 14, 18 and 21.
