I-cards for J&K border area inhabitants

In a bid to curb infiltration, the Jammu and Kashmir police has decided to issue identity cards to villagers living near the border in the Jammu and Ladakh regions in the state, a senior police official said.

About 350,000 I-cards would be issued to the villagers residing within 10km of the international border and within five km from the Line of Control (LoC) from Kathua to Akhnoor and in Leh district, IGP (Crime and Railways) Chowdhary Masood said.

Chowdhary said the cards, which will be tamper-proof and cannot be replicated, will have a code number at its top and carry a photograph of the holder and particulars of the village he resides in.

Only the district superintendent of police or his deputy would issue the cards after proper verification by security agencies with the help of members of the local government bodies (gram panchayats).
