Kashmir Pandits submit memorandum to President

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

An eight-member delegation of Kashmiri Pandits headed by Pandit Moti Lal, president of Panun Kashmir, called on President K R Narayanan and submitted a two-page memorandum.

The Pandits, who were forced to leave the Kashmir valley since 1990 because of terrorist violence, demanded a separate homeland.

They asked the government to restore the Kashmir Cell and increase the subsistence allowance for migrant families.

Earlier, the Panun Kashmir volunteers took out a thinly attended procession to press their demands.

Dr Mrs Neerja Tiku, the only woman present, said she still hoped that one day the Kashmiri Pandits would be able to go back to their homeland and live their lives peacefully.
